9 ways to be green in hospitality in 2009! - Blog Action Day

It is so cold and rainy in New York City today, and it's only October! I mean, talk about CLIMATE CHANGE. Well, speaking of climate change, today happens to be Blog Action Day! And this year's theme is Climate Change. (read more here on blogactionday.org about Blog Action Day...)

Climate change has major implications on the travel and tourism industry. Many attractions like tropical areas, sun-sea-sand destinations, skiing, and cruise lines are heavily impacted by the seasons. Patterns and seasonality of the industry could be negatively affected if climate impedes or defers travel to that destination. In 2005, and article called "The Effect of Climate Change and Extreme Weather Events on Tourism" was published, providing an in depth analysis of specific ways that Climate Change will hurt tourism. Read the full article HERE.

As New York University's Hospitality Business Society's contribution to talking about climate change, we'd like to share a few ways that the hospitality industry can strive to be more sustainable, precautions which will hopefully help to prevent/reduce the drastic environmental changes that are upon us!

ONE "One way we can make travel more sustainable is by purchasing carbon offsets. I worked at Seadog where out boats guzzled gas, so we paid to plant trees to offset the damage." - Nikki Parsons, 2012

TWO "In a hotel, we definitely use an immense amount of paper. From associate applications and new hire packets to guest registration cards and powerpoint printouts, we are surrounded by paper. A great way for us to become more green and sustainable would be to create and store more documents electronically instead of using trees!" - Lauren Bosch, 2012

THREE "In order for companies and hotels to go green and be sustainable, recycling and green efforts should be seamless. It should not take away the luxury aspect of hotels. Guests should be 'green' without knowing it!" - Katie Tang, 2012 (http://www.tonic.com/article/5-things-hotels-are-doing-to-save-the-planet/)

FOUR "One way to make the travel/hospitality industry more sustainable would be incorporate the local farmers and farmers into the purchasing process of the kitchen. Buy local produce!" - Laura Wang, 2009

FIVE "Ecotourism is an adventurous way to travel and experience nature and local culture, plus you leave a minimal carbon footprint. Also, check out the Emerald Monkey Eco-Luxe Resort off the coast of Panama: proof that you can always make green choices, even in the lap of luxury!" - Angela Wu, 2012

SIX "Sustainable tourism should be about communication and consent from local, preexisting inhabitants, animals included. I don't mean talking to animals but we should be conservative in thinking about anything that could potentially harm the local community. They should be an integral part of all decision-making because in the end, we are using and visiting their homes." - Yvette Ly, 2012

SEVEN "We can install systems that interface lights and air conditioning functions with room keys, so that no energy is wasted on vacant rooms." - Erin Rudd, 2012

EIGHT "I stayed at the New Yorker Hotel, and the one thing i remembered from that hotel was that they encouraged their guests to reuse their towels (both the shower towels and the small towels) so they didn't have to waste as much water." - Jimmy Chang, 2013

NINE Use less and be resourceful!

Happy Blog Action Day! Save the world, one post at a time...
